Fiji make nostalgia-drive italo and it’s like musical marmite – you’ll either lover it or hate it. And if it’s hate you’re dead inside.
Nostalgia can be a tricky concept when it comes to making music, indulge in it too much and your music can come off as a pastiche; a cheap knock-off that’s not really serving anyone apart from the artist’s own wistfulness, and if you pay too little attention to it, you’ll end up sounding cold, and robotic with no real sense of place.
Fiji’s new track ‘Sexy’ is dangerously nostalgic – but somehow it still manages to be incredibly engrossing, especially so, once it’s dowsed in a spellbinding French vocal and then paired with a particularly retrofied video.
It’s no wonder, then, that Fiji are from Switzerland, a country that has four main languages (German, French, Italian and Romansh) and is a true melting pot of cultures and influences from all four corners of Europe.
And ‘Sexy’ certainly exhibits this euro DNA with nods to disco, pop, italo and techno, and kinda ends up sounding like a love letter to The Droids’ ‘The Force’.
